i always bring a bottle i work offshore i dont drink an awful lot at home if your drinking thai branded stuff then thres really no point just a matter of preference watch a thais eyes light up when u use non thai branded alcohol though

there are various home learning things you can try i looked up on youtube and there was various minor guides there are rosetta stone and pimsluer but you can probably get one from your local library get on tagged.com and start speaking to thai girls they can love practicing english and it knocks two birds out with one stone howeever if you have trouble pulling in thailand id worry theres the pimsleur version on mininova for bittorrent and a few websites that teach you aswell
