  1. I have been up on the slow train, you can then hire a tuk tuk to take you around the temple.

I got a taxi back into Bangkok - but to be honest it was awhile ago so can remember the amount of time it took.

Its nice trip if you get chance.

  2. Thanks for the report.

A couple of my friends who lived in Pattaya (in the early 30s) have both moved up to Udon, and described it to me as "having everything Pattaya has but smaller" - doesnt really sound that way from you report lol.

I was debating to go up for a trip one day, think I will give it a miss.

    Cheers!

I am in town end of November until 16th December if anyone wants to meet up for a beer

  4. thanks for the review.  I went there once a few years back and thought it was overpriced.  I treated a BKK based friend and we each got the Ribeye, which was not very good.  Wine was ok, but not great value.

Where is the best steak in BKK?   I live in NYC, so I eat plenty of steak here, but would like to know of a place in BKK as well.  I think the best steak I had in BKK so far was actually at Check Inn 99.  Decent Filet, cheap wine, good sides.  Very reasonable, but certainly not "classy", more BKK old school.

To be honest, I thought it was the best steak that I have had in a long time.

A cheaper (not by much) option is the El Gacho steak houses, which is where I normally go.

There is one under Terminal 21 at Asoke, just as you enter soi 21

The second smaller one has recently opened on soi 11.

Photo below is a steak from there:

  5. Quick review of the Rib Room and Bar at the Landmark Hotel for anyone interested:

The restaurant is located on the top of the Landmark hotel.  There are two lifts that access the the place from the lobby.

    • Very nice restaurant, though be aware its not too cheap.
    • Great views as you would expect from the top floor, you can look right down into nana lol!
    • Wine list is comprehensive with bottles on there for over 500k! lol

I had the risotto and scallops to start, then the surf and turf for the main ( you have order the side dishes separate, which was vegetables and potato gratin.

The girl I was with had the lamb bolognese.

We had one bottle of Chilean Red, and some bottle of water.

Would definitely recommend the place if you want to treat yourself. I would say the steak there was better than Gachos where I normally go at Terminal 21.

    Service excellent.

    Total price: 8300THB

  6. It's actually very easy to find.  It is right before you get to the Beer Garden on soi 7(same side as the beer garden).  I heard they were going to be redoing it, but not sure how true that is.  I rarely ever go through there anymore.

yep, easy to find of both sois. Used to go down there many years ago to the tunnel bar/club (i think it was called that, on the left hand side walking from soi 5).....it was of the only late night spots back in 2004 0r 2005 when the bars closed at 1 am for while.

  7. Majestic is a good choice.

Other ones you might want to look at

Dawin Hotel, soi 4- some photos in Burly Bobs recent trip report.  I have stayed there numerous times, nice clean hotel, good location and nice little rooftop pool.

Landmark hotel is decent, but its quite expensive.

Dynasty Grand on Soi six is a decent hotel, got a big pool and decent gym if you need it.

  8. I went to the Dome at Labua last week (separate one from Sirroco- its under the big dome- obviously)

It has a set course menu, which was 5k for a 5 course meal and 7k for a 7 course meal.

Portions were very small, my final bill come to 27k- service was excellent, food was excellent - but as I say only small portions.

I wouldn't go again to the Dome, but I would like to try sirocco at some point.

  9. Welcome to the board.

Not stayed at majestic so can comment, but its in a great location.

Landmark Hotel is decent hotel and in a great location (near majestic) on Suk Rd just around the corner from soi 4 and all the action, and just a few steps from BTS stop at Nana. You can get rooms for about 3k a night (60 quid-ish).

Cheaper alternative you might want to have a look at is the Dawin hotel which is down Soi 4, got a pool and nice little cafe, but the rooms are quite small.  Not sure on the price now but maybe around 1700-2000?

Other options you may want to have a look are the Dynasty Grand and Aloft (on Soi 11- so a bit of a trek from the P4P action)
