It all depends on the vaccine. Not much is going to change in SE Asia until the distribution of a vaccine, but I believe several vaccines (multiple sources) will have successfully passed their stage 3 tests by the end of 2020. I can't speak for Europe, Australia, or NE Asia, but once approval is certified in the US, distribution will be fast and the people that want it will have it by March or April 2021.

Is this hopeful thinking? We shall see. But, it is already the end of September. By late November/early December we should have definitive results on several stage 3 tests.

Keep in mind, there is always Brazil which is wide open right now as we speak. I could fly down to Rio or Sao Paulo tomorrow if I wanted to. No quarantine! All you need is a negative test result, proof of valid health insurance, and no temperature upon arrival. By the way, SP has the best nightlife in all of SA. It is impressive.

Brazil, it's an interesting option that I'm looking at for December of this year instead of Bangkok. I have to use up my holiday before the end of the year or I lose it so I want to go somewhere. What is off putting about Brazil, apart from the world's third highest rate of COVID infection, is that it’s not really a tourist type place most of the time. So a basic ability of communicating in Portuguese is needed and then there is the safety aspect. I think it’s extremely unlike that tourists or mongers would get involved in serious crime, murders shootings and the such like, as long as you stay out of the favelas  but petty crime like muggings seems to be almost expected. It’s hard to assess the risk. In Bangkok I never felt at risk. Brazil is something different and it’s hard to know who to believe.

I've heard good things about Costa Rica which sounds safer by at least an order of magnitude.

The two stand out countries for mongering in Latin America are Brazil (Sao Paulo and Rio) and Colombia (Medellin, Bogota, Cartagena). While it is true that the violence is higher in SA than in Asia (LOS, Jakarta, or even Manila), that does not mean you will be confronted with it or have to worry about it as long as don't wander around into poor, dangerous neighborhoods unescorted, keep you eyes open to your surroundings at all times, and don't do anything stupid. The proof is that the vast majority of punters who visit these cities and focus on the girls and the possibly the beaches are fine and have a great time.

So I highly recommend a trip to #1 Sao Paulo and Rio or #2 Medellin and Cartagena especially if you have never been there. Costa Rica, on the other hand, has some very beautiful beaches and rain forests, but the girly situation does not come close to Brazil or Colombia and for that reason I would recommend putting CR on the back burner.

The reason I so highly recommend Sao Paulo and Medellin is very simple: it is all about the girls. Considering looks, variety, and sexual appetites I rate both Sao Paulo and Medellin girls as better than BKK girls. I am serious. But in terms of ease of access (location mostly and openness), language requirements, and yes overall safety BKK & Pattaya are still #1. But then in terms of value for the dollar and wild sex, I would again have to say SA, Brazil especially, wins by a wide margin.

So, check SA out if Thailand is still closed early next year. That's my game plan and it has been over 15 years since I was in Brazil, but I am starting to get stoked.

Looking at Nov/Dec 2021 for a trip back to Thailand, possibly include Manila in that trip if the vaccine works and the hassels of entry into the countries are reduced or eliminated.  Looking for mid summer for a short trip to Costa Rica than back to LOS in the fall, fingers and toes crossed.
