Jetlag

I let the time at the location I arrived at dictate what I do when I arrive. So, whether its 6pm or 6am when I arrive, I stay up and don't go to bed until the time I normally go to bed. It doesn't matter what time it is where I just came from. Sure, I might be a bit tired that first night I arrive. However, after I go to bed that night and wake up the next day I'm fine.

I have returned home.

 

I work shift work in the marine industry so I stand a watch during the day and again at midnight and catch about 3 to 4 hours sleep between watches. I stayed on that schedule my entire trip. Up at night from about 8PM till 4AM slept from around 4AM till 8AM or so was out and about all day till about 6PM then a nap for a couple of hours. It was great and I was seldom tired.

 

I took the “No Jet Lag” supplements as directed going both directions during my flights. I don’t know if it was them or my crazy sleep pattern to begin with but I had no jet lag I was just tired from he flight when I arrived but was busy every day and night I was there.

Rowyco has a point especially when you are on a short trip or fast turnaround. In order to force your body clock to adjust immediately, use the arriving city's time zone as your guide to eat, sleep, party or whatever.

 

I like to knock myself out (sleeping pill over the counter or doctor prescription), usually on the flight over to LOS. I drink lots of water and keep hydrated on board the plane. Not too much alcohol as the altitude does a number on you if your drunk.

When I get to LOS if it is about 11:30 A.M. coming in from SFO, I jump into the shower and grab a bite to eat for lunch, maybe check out a MBK, head back to the hotel, take a light siesta in the afternoon and start my nite out when the bars open which is routine. If I need a pick up at nite, a couple of red bull's, coffee or coke helps keep you alert and awake. Oh and don't forget your vitamins.. :lol:

My input is a bit different since I am usually travelling from Guam ( only about 2 or 3 hours difference from BKK)...I board a Philippine Air flight at around 6am or so [Guam time]...arrive in Manila around 0815 or so(Manila time)...depart Manila around 10 AM (Manila time) and arrive in Thailand around 1230 or so...I can be having lunch in my apartment(in BKK) by around 1330 to 1400 Local time (BKK time)... I find abiez's comments to be right in line with what I have practiced most of my life...(I did 24 years in the military with lots of travel.)

I come from Europe so I have 6-7 hours plus. Usually I noticed that it is best to immidiately live in the new timezone - I therefore try to land in the morning.

 

When I go aboard in Europe I start behaving like I'm already on BKK time - so early supper - quick to sleep and raise early on BKK-Time - perfect.

I found since I started flying Business, it is much easy to get a good sleep on the plane. If I can't sleep it will be a very long day and jetlag is immanent.

In essence it only works if you are able to sleep on a plane.

Being a noob i dont have any experience of jetlag to or from LOS. So heres my question, I will b travelling from uk and my itineraly for flight says UK to DUBIA (6hrs) 2hr stop over then DUBIA to BANGKOK (6hrs) I leave in evening from UK and arrive in evening to BKK. I dont no how the jetlag will affect me. Any advice on the above of what i should do for counter actin jetlag or will i b fine

You will have Jetlag - no doubt - Bkk is 7 hours ahead. Bkk midnight is 5pm UK, the body usually needs about faultnight to fully adjust to this kind of change in your sleep cycle. Of course on holiday you stay up late up get up late aswell so you will not suffer as much as if you were working - e.g. getting up Bkk 7 a.m.is like getting up UK midnight.

The Advantage for us europeans is that the hard jetlag happens when fly eastwards bound - so you will have jetlag when you arrive in LOS. Coming home you just will rise early (I usually wake up at 3 a.m. the first week) and will be going to bed very early. B)

You might get jetlag, but I don't. What I said holds true for me. Everyone is different.

Here are my 2 cents, don't sleep on the plane. Get a flight which lands in BKK around midday or onwards, stay awake till 9pm at least and go to bed a bit early, don't drink any alcohol the first night, you'll see that you wake up the next day feeling just fine, maybe a little bit weary but the next day you won't notice a thing. at least this is what works for me when i go to japan for example. i live in europe btw.

Drink lots of water the day of your flight. Avoid alcohol at all costs. Attempt to sleep only at the same time as night time in the arrival time zone.

 

Failing that, get obscenely drunk, top up with prescription drugs, add a cialis/viagra, and get 2 BGs back to your room.

1. Try to fly an Asian carrier who departs late at night for SEA. For example, EVA leaves SFO at 1:00 am and gets you into BKK in the morning. I find that departing California during my regular bedtime makes the jet lag almost non-existent.

 

2. Take a drowsy-type of antihistamine like Benadryl. Keeps me sleeping for the first 5-6 hours of the flight.

 

3. Drink plenty of water and avoid in-flight alcohol.

 

4. Upon arrival, get some exercise (on morning arrivals). I usually hit the gym after checking in. The exercise and sweating re-sets my body clock.

 

5. I avoid doing an all-nighter on my first night. Some reasonable amount of drinking/hounding, but nothing excessive. The next day, I'm ready to rock.

 

5. My jet lag is normally the opposite -- I'm fucked for the first 3-4 days when I get home. However, last trip I took some melatonin on a recommendation and it helped immensely.

No way around it, first day is screwed. I usually opt for the noon flight out of LAX-Tokyo. Sleep the whole way. Then JAL gets into BKK at 10pm. Get to hotel, get food, chill out. Next day, wake up whenever, take it easy. Then hit up the bars at night.

 

Jetlag bothers me much less than the heat. Takes a couple days before I can go out during the day. Takes a couple weeks before I can go out during the day without thinking - F*ck, it's hot! - and feeling like I'm gonna pass out.

 

Jetlag always hits me when I get back. Sleep is screwed for 2 weeks.
