A very close friend to me has been diagnosed with liver cancer,He lives in australia he's got no choice but to have a transplant, and he would be a long time dead waiting for one in aus,

Has anyone done this in thailand or know of someone who has??would anyone have any ideas as where to start contacting hospitals ect??my friend is 57 retired very fit for he's age,he obviously wants to fight this disease he wants to live and is prepared to pay money to get to the top of the que, would anyone know of the rough costs involved to get to the top of the que??

He has a comfortable lifestyle but is not a rich man he's prepared to take out a loan against he's home.Any pertinent information would be greatly appreciated, the right information could lead to a very good drink for that person involved.

Mate this is a massive topic, the best advice I can give is get to be a member on Thai  Visa web site , and in the health section ask Sheryl, she is the font of all knowledge on subjects like this she will advise you on the options available in Thailand.

But I do know this it is not that cheap to come here for something as serious as liver transplant , but I would think cheaper than Australia on the private option.

Hope this helps mate good luck to your mate

I am not sure how compatible livers sourced from an Asian donor would be for a western recipient so might take a while to find a suitable match.  As far as I know Thai medical facilities are as comprehensive as you can find in other countries and tend to be lower cost however for a successful outcome transplant teams need experience and I am not sure how many people have transplants in Thailand.

Your mate needs to do a lot of homework before he decides what to do as treatment under Medicare in Oz is normally very good.

Tnx willow we will be doing as much research as we can, unfortunately by the time a match came along it would be way to late for my mate in australia. As has been hinted to him from he's doctor so wer'e looking abroad,As for compatibility we will have to find that out as well. He's not trying to cut cost he needs it done the sooner the better.

Best check with his doctor the compatibility question with people coming from SE Asia. Given the high number of road deaths in Thailand there could be lot more potential younger donors but I am not sure about religious pressures.

Yes willow we have been given reason to believe that a liver can pop up very quickly with all the unfortunate road deaths in thailand, give the grieving family a bit of cash to help ease the pain not unheard of.We are trying to find someone who's in a position to be able to line up that scenario .
